Although MTV had a large, loyal following and was considered one of the most popular channels among TV reputeers it did have its sh be of critics. Among those critics were euphonyians parents, drop off labels, and indiviuduals.
Musicians felt that MTV was taking away the musical comedy aspect of the music and replacing it with visual aesthetic music videos causing a distinct disadvantge for those bands. Steven Levy from the popular band Rolling Stones wrote, MTVs superior achievement has been to coax rock & roll into the video field of study where you cant distinguish between entertainment and the sales pitch. The bases around their complaints was that MTV was giving exposure to the bands that werent as musically talented as otherwise bands but just became popular because of their appearance on the network. Another area of criticism was MTVs potrayal of women. In a portion of the videos that aired on the channel, scenes with women playing provacative roles and being seen as bitches, hoes, sex objects and the like was common. Usually appearing with over done make-up and scantalous outfits, it created a message to viewers that that is the norm and this is what is popular. Parents were particulary vocal about this because their kids watch this channel and they are concerned with the message that is being direct to their kids.
