Equal chance to pursue joy means an equal crack at the dough, dont it? (Bambara 57). In The Lesson, Toni Cade Bambara uses theme and symbolism to give the audience a sense of reality and make us realize the domain is not an equal place. Through the characters, which ar whole African American children and no older than thirteen, we are competent to able to sense the effects of developing up in the midst of socioeconomic differences in America. This is described through their use of delivery their attitude, and nicknames (Junebug and Fat Butt). Ms Moore prevailed over these issues and her purpose in the narrative was to encourage the children to do the same.
The Lesson is a reflection of the struggle growing up in this part of time, â¦..cause we all moved sexual union the same time and to the same apartmentâ¦..(Bambara 1). The author describes the approximation they are unfortunately living in as the slums, commonwealth urinating in the hallways, the junkman, and cluttered parks. We can assume that the environment was a key influence in the childrens behavior. Where we are is who we are (44).

Miss Moore was the example of how one could rise above all the racism and culture differences, the only women in the neighborhood with a college degree. The people in the neighborhood were very two face to Ms Moore but they respected her, she was the only hope for all source of education their children were accessible to. Of course the children hated her, she was invariably
trying to teach them something and theyd much rather go swimming. They made fun of how dark she was and her clothes, she of all time dressed up. Moore offered the children a world they werent use to. They hated that there was always a lesson to be learned in everything she did with them.
